Really... I Never Win Anything
By Lew Weller
When I played my phone messages and some Rick from Eastern FNAWS wanted me to call him back, I figured someone was looking for a donation. When I returned the call and Rick said, “You are going elk hunting this year,” I said, “I know. I am going to Colorado with my son and friend in September.” He said, “You’ll also be going to British Columbia.” He went on to say that I was the winner of the elk hunt with Baldy Mountain Outfitters with Harry and Jill Leuenberger. After walking around and around in disbelief saying I never win anything, I called them and spoke with Jill. Sure enough, I was going to British Columbia elk hunting. After a little juggling of my plans, it was decided that I would drive to Colorado to meet up with my son for that hunt. After the completion of that hunt I would drive to Kalispell and meet up with Jill to follow her to camp. The camp was everything I could hope for. Their area is beautiful and game rich. It was so exciting. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate. One day we had heavy rain, and the next few days it was very windy with full moon and clear nights. We saw elk every day, but just never were able to put it all together. I did get wolf, a trophy I always wanted. What a thrill! I have been on a few guided hunts before which were super, but Baldy Mountain Outfitters really went that extra mile – always making sure that I was comfortable and asking if I needed anything. Harry is the hardest working guide I have ever been with. What an experience. If you get a chance to go hunting with Harry, do it. Thank you Harry and Jill for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
